French unions and student groups called Monday for a national day of strikes March 28th to protest a youth jobs plan that has already provoked huge street demonstrations and paralyzed many universities. Therefore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Great Britain recommended British tourists to withhold visiting mass demonstration locations.
Meanwhile, Russian tour operating companies which specialize in the French market doubt seriousness of the situation. Rioters blowing up ‘Molotov cocktails’, throwing rocks and bottles at police, burning cars and vandalizing property forced their way into the Sorbone and Place des Nations. The French police localize the riot within the mentioned area.
Furthermore, Ludmila Tikhonenkova, Vice-president of Lanta-tour Voyage, visited Paris in the middle of March and could witness the riots: ‘we had to calm down our clients but we did not experience massive cancellations. The only problem tourists face in Paris is frequent traffic jams. Traditional areas for tourists’ accommodation and excursions - Right Bank of the River Seine, Place de la République and the 9th district – are not occupied by rioters. The only exclusion is excursion to the Latin Quarter that we have to substitute by a similar excursion. Frequent riots in Paris do not affect tourists, as there are schemes to minimize transport inconveniences’.
Tatiana Artemieva from Evolucion Voyage agreed: ‘situation in Paris does not frighten Russian tourists who are booking tours for May Holidays at the moment. Those, who travel on business are not at concerned about the riots’.
