Last weekend in total 200 flights by Alitalia were cancelled due to the strike of trade unions. ITAR-TASS reports that Italian Government plan to negotiate with trade unions’ representatives on 25th of January. However, Alitalia has already cancelled the flights planned for 23rd, including Moscow-Rome and Moscow-Milan flights.
Meanwhile, according to experts interviewed by a BANKO correspondent, Alitalia flight cancellation has not affected the Russian travel market considerably. ‘The majority of those who go to Rome and Milan at the moment go to the exhibitions. Therefore, the traffic is not high', explained Executive Director of Mondo Tours, Lyubov Chistyakova. Moreover, experts point out that Russian travel market got accustomed to various protest actions.
On the other hand, experts believe that if the same problem arises during the high season, it can be problematic to substitute Alitalia flights with flights by other airline company. ‘Aeroflot does not provide blocks on its flights. Therefore, to increase the number of charters could be an alternative decision. But charter flights will never become equivalent to regular ones’, said Marina Nikitenko, the Head of Italia Sector of PAK Group.
