2005 results show that for the first time Domodedovo has moved ahead of Sheremetevo in terms of passenger traffic, handling 13.96 million people against Sheremetyevo's 12.17 million. Angelina Matrosova, Head of PR at Sheremetevo Airport, commented on the unfavourable figures: ‘it was a deliberate decision not to extend our charter program. We are quite satisfied with our quantitative figures. At the moment we are working hard for the long-term development of the airport – our terminals are being reconstructed and we are developing the new rail connection with Savelovskyi Railway Station. Our principal target is not only to increase passenger traffic, but to improve the quality of service we provide’.
Representatives of Aeroflot, which supplies Sheremetevo with 7 million passengers per year, point out that due to the increased number of flights, Domodedovo has begun to experience serious problems. ‘The airport is overcrowded, it hardly copes with the traffic’, said Irina Dannenberg, the Head of Aeroflot Press Service.
However, Domodedovo also plans to increase its' terminal area - by 50% by 2007.
According to tour operators interviewed by a BANKO correspondent, Domodedovo remains the preferred airport for transit passengers - as a result of the better connections available there between international and domestic flights.
As for Muscovites, preferences tend to be formed by subjective impressions rather than official figures.
